Are you looking for something to do in the Sarasota area that is outside but an alternative to the beach?

Today I am going to tell you about one of my favorite places : Myakka River State Park.

Myakka River State Park is one of Florida’s oldest and largest parks. Myakka River is Florida’s first state-designated wild and scenic river, and it flows through 58 miles of the park. The river flows through unspoiled wetlands, prairies, hammocks, and pinelands.

Myakka River State Park was built by the Civilian Conservation Corp back in 1934. There are quite a few of the original buildings still in use, including 5 log cabins and a pavillion, that are available for rental. There are several pavillions available to rent out for picnics and parties. We have rented them many times and they offer grills, shelter and one even has a fire place. In addition to the log cabins, there are two campgrounds offering water and electric sites, as well as five primitive sites that are set up along the hiking trails. Myakka River State Park offers many recreational activities, including hiking, biking, kayaking, canoeing, fishing, boating and more. Canoe, kayak’s and bike’s are available for rental at the Myakka Outpost.

There is even a boat ramp at the end of the road near the Myakka Outpost, if you would like to bring your boat. One thing you do not want to miss out on is the Canopy Walkway at Myakka. You can explore the treetops while walking 25 feet above the ground on the swing bridge, which leads to a 74 foot tower, offering a birds-eye view. This a truely one of a kind experience.

You will not want to miss the Lazy Gator Cafe. Enjoy lunch, dessert or a craft beer, all while taking in the sights of the beautiful Upper Myakka Lake. Enjoy fresh homemade offerings, including alligator stew and seafood gumbo as well as sandwiches, wraps, grilled hotdog and burgers, hand scooped ice cream and more. Don’t miss out on trying the gator bites! My family gets them everytime we go.

There is a gift shop located in the same building as the Cafe, offering a large selection of “typical Florida gifts”, as well as jewelry, t-shirts, art made my local artists, and much more. There is also a camp store near the outpost offering a wide assortment of grocery items, camping supplies, ice, firewood and fishing gear for purchase.

If you are hoping for a closer look at the wildlife, specifically a lot of alligators, the Myakka River Queen is a great option. The Myakka River Queen is a boat ride out onto Upper Myakka Lake. There is also a land based tram tour available. Eithe way you are sure to see a lot of local, Florida wildlife.

Myakka River State Park is open 365 days a year, from 8 a.m. to sundown. The cost is $4 for a single person, and $6 per carload, up to 8 people. The park welcomes your canine companions, as long as they are on a leash. You are welcome to bring them on the walking trails, just not onto the Canopy Walkway itself.

The Myakka River State Park is located just 9 miles east of I-75, off of Clark Road (exit 205). If you are looking for an alternative to the beach, Myakka is a great option. Myakka State Park is a great place to spend a peaceful day under the oak hammocks!
